Tottenham have agreed a £4 million move for Sporting Lisbon centre back Eric Dier, subject to a medical.
Premier League clubs Newcastle and West Ham were also reportedly interested in the player but Spurs have emerged as the winner to secure a five-year deal for the Englishman as Argentine Mauricio Pochettino adds more strength to the defence that conceded 51 goals last season.
He was picked up by Sporting Lisbon scouts when he moved to Lisbon and has advanced through their academy to break into their first team.
A versatile defensive player, he can also provide cover at right back and in defensive midfield.
He has become Spurs' third signing of the summer after they signed Michael Vorm and Ben Davies from Swansea.
A club statement said: 'We are delighted to announce that we have reached agreement with Sporting Lisbon for the transfer of Eric Dier, subject to a medical.
Dier has seven England Under-21 caps to his name after making his debut against Scotland in August 2013.
