Chelsea to give up on MAIN TRANSFER TARGET

Mourinho will look elsewhere for new central defender

Chelsea to give up on MAIN TRANSFER TARGET

02 August 2015 - 10:41

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has hinted that the club may give up on their pursuit of Everton defender John Stones.

  • Fabrizio Romano updates on Nicolas Jackson's future at Chelsea
  • Arsenal suffer big injury blow ahead of Fulham game
  • The Blues have had two bids of around &pound20m and &pound26m knocked back for Stones by the Merseyside outfit.

Mourinho has now insisted that the club could look elsewhere to strengthen their back line ahead of the new season.

He added that they are forced to move for a new centre-back this summer as they are over-reliant on their senior pairing of Gary Cahill and John Terry to do the job.

"Five is not enough. That's obvious," Mourinho told ESPN. "We cannot go to the Premier League with five defenders. That's our weakness. The quality is good, but the numbers are not enough."
