Manchester United are reportedly planning a surprise bid for Mainz striker Yoshinori Muto.
The Red Devils have struggled to find the net on a regular basis this season and this has affected their league form over the past month.
According to The Mirror, United have been keeping a keen eye on the Japan international, and will make a move for his services when the transfer window reopens in the New Year.
It is added that the 23-year-old is hugely admired by Sir Alex Ferguson, who is now part of the club's board.
United are currently placed sixth in the league standings following a 2-0 defeat at Stoke City on Boxing Day.
