Man Utd plot sensational swoop for Liverpool midfielder

Manchester United could be set to make a sensational move to sign Liverpool midfielder Joe Allen, according to reports.

  • Chelsea to move for former Arsenal goalkeeper?
  • Arsenal handed huge boost ahead of Bournemouth clash

  • The South Wales Evening Post is reporting that United are interested in signing the 26-year-old Wales international, and could soon make their move, with the player in the final year of his Liverpool contract.

Allen was signed for Liverpool by former manager Brendan Rodgers, and initially the former Swansea City player struggled to hold down a regular first team place.

However, towards the latter part of last season, the Welshman put in some excellent displays for the Reds, helping Jurgen Klopp's men reach the final of the Europa League, only to fall to defeat against Sevilla.

Allen carried his outstanding form into this summer's UEFA European Championship in France, where he helped Wales reach the semi-final. Allen's performances for the Dragons led to him being selected in the UEFA team of the tournament, alongside the likes of Toni Kroos and Cristiano Ronaldo.

New United manager José Mourinho is known to be on the lookout for midfield additions, with the Portuguese coach hoping to entice Paul Pogba back to the club, in a deal which could be worth up to £100 million.

Allen would be a shock candidate for a switch to Old Trafford given that the last player to move between Liverpool and Manchester United was Phil Chisnall in 1962.
