Everton have shifted their focus to Crystal Palace's Scott Dann after being rebuffed in their attempts to sign Swansea City defender Ashley Williams.
The 29-year-old was touted as a possible target for Everton last summer before he penned a five-year contract at Selhurst Park.
According to The Mirror, manager Ronald Koeman has stepped up the club's chase for a new centre-back with John Stones seemingly close to joining Manchester City.
Williams was the Toffees' preferred option for the transfer window before the Swans snubbed their £10m approach, thereby ruling out the player's sale.
Dann has been a consistent performer for Palece in recent years, and it is thought that Koeman would prefer an experienced head to lead the backline.
Everton will be without the services of Phil Jagielka for the Premier League opener as he is nursing a hamstring problem.
