De Vrij likely to pen Lazio extension

Chelsea receive big blow as Serie A target is offered a fresh contract

Chelsea will reportedly end their pursuit for Lazio's Stefan di Vrij after the Italian side opted to open up discussions over a new contract with the player. The Netherlands international was the subject of a failed £21m bid from the Blues over the summer.

  • The 24-year-old had emerged as a possible target for Antonio Conte during the back end of the transfer window after the club failed to get in deals for Kalidou Koulibaly and Alessio Romagnoli.

However, they were not keen to pay up Lazio's £35m price tag for the Dutchman and rather opted to re-sign David Luiz from Paris Saint-Germain for a fee of around £32m.

It had been recently suggested that the West London giants could revive their interest in De Vrij in the New Year, but with Lazio working on a contract extension, their hopes of signing the player may well be gone.

Di Vrij's current deal is due to expire in the summer of 2018.
