Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera has been called up to the Spain national side by new manager Julen Lopetegui, giving the 27-year-old the opportunity to win his first senior cap for La Roja.
Herrera has represented Spain at under 20, under 21 and under 23 level, but has never made an appearance for the senior side, despite some fine form for both Athletic Bilbao and United in recent years.
But it seems as though He will now get his chance to earn his first caps, after being called up to Lopetegui’s 23 man squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifying matched against Italy and Albania.
Herrera signed for United in the summer of 2013 for £28 million, after being linked with a move to Old Trafford for the previous 12 months.
There was even some controversy in the 2013 summer transfer window, when a alleged delegation of United officials travelled to Bilbao to negotiate his purchase, only for it later to be revealed that the men never had the authority to do so.
Herrera found himself in and out for the first team line up under Louis van Gaal, who would inexplicable drop the gifted midfielder for weeks at a time. He made 31 appearances in his first season and scored eight goals and 41 the following term with 5 goals.
This season, under new manager Jose Mourinho, Herrera again found himself on the bench initially, but he has since fought his way into the side and appears to be the first choice partner for Paul Pogba in the centre of midfield, making eight appearances so far with one goal to his name, coming in the EFL Cup third round victory over Northampton Town.
