  • Multiple media outlets, including Sky Sports and the BBC, are reporting that England skipper Wayne Rooney will be starting from the bench for the Three Lions World Cup qualifier away to Slovenia tomorrow evening.

England caretaker boss Gareth Southgate initially stood by Rooney amid widespread criticism of his recent form, and started the Manchester United player in his favoured midfield role against Malta at Wembley at the weekend.

But the Three Lions produced a lacklustre display on their way to an underwhelming 2-0 win over their low ranked visitors, and Rooney was particularly disappointing.

The 30-year-old looked off the pace against Malta and conceded possession on numerous occasions.

Now, according to reports, Southgate has taken the decision to drop Rooney for the tricky fixture away to Slovenia.

Rooney has already suffered the same fate at club level having been forced to accept a substitute’s role for the Red Devils.

United boss Jose Mourinho started Rooney in the number 10 position at the beginning of the season. There were widespread calls for the 30-year-old to be dropped for his poor form, and the Portuguese eventually removed him from the team which beat Leicester City 4-1 at Old Trafford last month.
