  • Jose Mourinho's side have been highly successful with the 4-2-3-1 formation in recent months, and a win over the Reds could better their chances of challenging for the title.

    Lineup:

Spain international David de Gea has been ever-present for United in the league this season. He is a definite starter for the encounter.

Antonio Valencia and Daley Blind will most probably be picked for the right-back positions and left-back positions. Matteo Darmian has been in the mix in recent months but Mourinho would prefer Blind, who is better at adept at controlling the game.

Marcus Rojo is a minor doubt for the encounter, but he could be backed to partner alongside Phil Jones at the heart of the defence.

Veteran Michael Carrick remains a crucial part of the Red Devils' plans despite his age. He will seek to make key interceptions in midfield accompanied by regular partner Ander Herrera.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan recently won the goal of the month accolade for his excellent scorpion kick against Sunderland. He will take up a role on the right wing with skipper Wayne Rooney on the other flank.

Rooney will be looking to make history against the Merseyside giants after he matched Sir Bobby Charlton's club record of 249 goals against Reading in the FA Cup.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic missed the EFL Cup semi-final in midweek through illness, but he is expected to be fit to showcase his talents against a shaky Reds backline.
