Victor Lindelof snubs United interest for fresh Benfica contract

06 March 2017 - 06:16

Sweden international Victor Lindelof has reportedly inked a new four-year deal with Primeira Liga champions Benfica.

  • Confirmed Man Utd line-up vs Liverpool, Matheus Cunha starts
  • Chelsea quoted price to sign Igor Thiago

  • The Portuguese giants have managed to ward off interest from Manchester United to commit their defender for the long-term.

Lindelof, 22, had been heavily tipped to join the Old Trafford outfit in the winter period with United deemed to have finalized a &pound38m for his services.

However, manager Jose Mourinho decided to halt the move due to the form of Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones, and this appears to have not gone well with Benfica.

Benfica have since played hardball with an increased &pound50m valuation for their asset, and they have now confirmed that the versatile defender will be staying at the club until 2021, The Sun reports.

Lindelof, who can play at either right-back or centre-back, would have been the perfect successor to Antonio Valencia in the future, but United will not have to look elsewhere for options.

Roma's Kostas Manolas is now the leading candidate on Mourinho's wish list with the need for a new central defender being a top priority this summer.
