Borussia Dortmund and Thomas Tuchel have parted ways just three days after the 43-year-old guided Dortmund to the German Cup.
Rumors had been circulating since the start of the week that Borussia Dortmund might sack manager Thomas Tuchel as tensions started to rise between the manager and the board. The news was finally confirmed by both parties earlier today as Tuchel was officially sacked just two years into his contract, which expires in 2018.
Borussia Dortmund released an official statement on their website saying: "Eight-time German Champions Borussia Dortmund and coach Thomas Tuchel are parting companies with immediate effect. This is a result of a conversation between Hans-Joachim Watzke, Sporting Director Michael Zorc, Thomas Tuchel and his advisor Olaf Meinking, which took place on Tuesday."
Dortmund proceeded to thank Tuchel for his contributions before hinting at a possible rift between club and manager: "The well-being of the club Borussia Dortmund, which is much more important than just sporting success, will always be more important."
Thomas Tuchel also released a statement via twitter thanking the fans and lamented: "It's a shame it won't go on,"
The 43-year-old took over Dortmund in 2015 when the team was in tatters following Jurgen Klopp's departure. Tuchel finished runner-up in the Bundesliga in his first season before finishing third in the 2016-2017 season and winning the German Cup, Dortmund's first trophy in five years.
Long-standing tensions between manager and club is understood to be the primary reason behind his sacking.
