Jeremy Mathieu free to leave Barcelona

23 June 2017 - 05:27

French defender Jeremy Mathieu has been told to find a fresh club this summer as he does not feature in the plans of Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde.

  • Mauricio Pochettino confirms fresh injury blow for Chelsea star
  • Arsenal want to make four marquee signings this summer

  • The versatile defender has spent the past three seasons with the Catalan giants where he has bagged 91 appearances across all competitions.

According to Goal.com, Barca are prepared to part ways with Mathieu in the summer despite him having a year left on his existing deal.

Mathieu struggled with injuries during the previous campaign, and this restricted him to just 13 starts in La Liga and Europe.

The former Valencia man is currently behind the likes of Gerard Pique, Samuel Umtiti and Javier Mascherano in the pecking order for the centre-back spot.

Mathieu has been used on occasions on the left side of the defence as well but Valverde is prepared to utilise the services of Jordi Alba and Lucas Digne in the position.

Sporting Lisbon are understood to have already approached for Mathieu's signature, and the deal could be finalised at the start of July.
