Ousmane Dembele's injury is worse than previously thought and the young winger will be out for up to four months.
The Frenchman made his debut for Barcelona just over a week ago, bagging his first assist in the process. However, the 20-year-old's start at his new club has been hit with the news that he will be spending up to four months on the sidelines.
Dembele hobbled off in Barcelona's 2-1 win over Getafe, but physiotherapists at the club suspected that he might have just lightly strained his hamstring. However, the club confirmed the severity of the injury after more detailed scan results came back, showing that Dembele had ruptured a tendon in his left thigh. Barcelona also confirmed that he will be out for three-and-a-half to four months.
The youngster has already jetted off to Finland to undergo surgery to repair the rupture in his thigh.
This is a huge blow for Barcelona as Dembele was brought in essentially to replace Neymar. The Brazilian left for PSG in a world-record €222 million fee. Dembele was brought in from Borussia Dortmund for €105 million.
The injury likely rules him out for the rest of the year, meaning he will miss the entirety of the Champions League group stages and the first El Clasico in December. Dembele will also have to keep track of his injury as the World Cup looms next year.
Gerard Deulofeu is expected to slot in during Dembele's absence.
