Jurgen Klopp's men rued their missed chances as they were only able to draw 1-1 with a poor Spartak Moscow side.
Much was said about Liverpool's front quartet of Philippe Coutinho, Saido Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah playing together competitively for the first time this season. The last time the four of them were in a side together was in pre-season where they defeated Bayern Munich 3-0 at the Allianz Arena.
They were expected to bail out Liverpool's leaky defence but it was the opposite on this occasion as the wasteful quartet prevented Liverpool from getting their first win in the Champions League.
The defence limited Spartak Moscow to only four shots all game. The goal came from a freekick on the 23rd minute from Fernando. It probably should have been saved by Loris Karius as the shot curled towards the center of the goal.
The Reds equalized less than 10 minutes later through Coutinho. A brilliant one-two with Mane set the Brazilian free and he hammered a shot in the back of the net.
However, Liverpool were not able to capitalize on countless chances after. Mane drifted offside, thus rendering his diving header goal ruled out. Firmino missed a sitter from a Jordan Henderson cross just minutes after.
The biggest miss of the game fell to Salah just before halftime. A brilliant counter-attack released Jordan Henderson on the right who squared it across the box past Mane's flailing leg but found Salah, who couldn't convert from three yards out.
The second-half had chances far and few between and Liverpool ended up with their second draw in the group stage of the Champions League.
