Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp could sign Spanish under-21 defender Jorge Mere from FC Koln next summer. The 20-year-old centre-back is wanted by Klopp who sees the defender as the long-term defensive enforcer at Anfield.

  • Klopp has been monitoring the former Sporting Gijon centre-back for over two years but decided against signing Jorge Mere as the defender needed more experience at the highest level. In July of this year Mere made a move to FC Koln for a fee of around 9 million euros and has since become a first-team regular. The Oviedo born defender has a 32 million euro release clause and it is understood that Liverpool could activate that in May 2018.

Widely regarded as one of the best defender's in all of Europe, Real Madrid are rumoured to have expressed some interest in Jorge Mere but have yet to make a bid. Real manager Zinedine Zidane believes that Mere could be an eventual replacement for Sergio Ramos, so highly rated is the youngster.

Liverpool have struggled defensively for some time and Klopp is hoping that the signing of Mere will improve the Anfield club's fortunes at the back.
