Gareth Southgate reveals reason behind Jack Wilshere snub

Southgate unlikely to pick Wilshere without regular EPL action

Gareth Southgate reveals reason behind Jack Wilshere snub

02 November 2017 - 19:36

England head coach Gareth Southgate has suggested that Jack Wilshere has little chance of making the Three Lions squad unless he gains regular Premier League action with Arsenal.

  • Fabrizio Romano updates on Nicolas Jackson's future at Chelsea
  • Arsenal suffer big injury blow ahead of Fulham game
  • The 25-year-old has managed just 13 minutes of top-flight action, but he has still caught the eye of Southgate after his impressive showing in the League Cup and Europa League.

Speaking at a news conference, Southgate insisted that he had no choice but to leave out Wilshere for the latest England squad following his reduced gametime at the Emirates.

"I don't know how you get in an England squad without getting in the Arsenal team," he is quoted as saying by ESPN. "There is no question about his ability, his football brain or personality.  I'll be having discussions with Arsene about him, we think he is a top player so for him it's about game time."

Wilshere has bagged 32 caps with the Three Lions with his last appearance coming in the shocking 2-1 loss to Iceland in the European Championship last year.

The playmaker presently has eight months left on his present deal, and Wenger has stressed that the club will do their best to secure his long-term future before the turn of the year.
