Jose Mourinho confirms Michael Carrick will start versus Watford

10 May 2018 - 07:58

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed that club-captain Michael Carrick will make his final appearance for the club during this weekend's Premier League game against Watford.

  • Chelsea to move for former Arsenal goalkeeper?
  • Former Chelsea boss to replace Erik ten Hag at Man Utd?

  • The former England international has made just one substitute league appearance for United this season but he is expected to start the final game of the league campaign before entering into retirement.

"He will start the last match. Old Trafford, last match of the Premier League. Our captain in front of our fans, he will start the match against Watford," Mourinho is quoted as saying by the club's official website.

Carrick has been a key performer for United over the past decade but his appearances have remained restricted this term after undergoing a surgery for an irregular heart rhythm.

Nevertheless, Carrick is valued highly by Mourinho and the veteran is expected to take up a backroom role under the Portuguese for the 2018/19 season and beyond.

Carrick has made 463 appearances for United since arriving from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2016. During this period, he has guided the club to five Premier League titles and one Champions League crown.
