Juventus chief confirms Manchester United were interested in young defender

15 August 2019 - 20:19

Juventus sporting director Fabio Paratici has confirmed that Manchester United were involved in negotiations to sign defender Merih Demiral before the English transfer deadline.

  • Arsenal make surprise decision on Viktor Gyokeres
  • Arsenal to battle Napoli to sign Alexsandro Ribeiro?

  • Earlier this month, the Red Devils were fancied to sign Paulo Dybala in a swap deal involving Romelu Lukaku, but the deal fell through with the former showing no intention of agreeing personal terms with the club.

Thereafter, Lukaku made the switch to Inter Milan and it was somewhat a surprise, considering the club decided against pursuing a replacement for the Belgian.

In an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport, Paratici has now confirmed that United were interested in signing more than one player and they had enquired over the availability of Demiral.

"He is our player who has had the most deals on the market, I don't imagine how many. The Turk was requested by Milan but was also approached by Manchester United," he told Gazzetta dello Sport.

Demiral joined the Bianconeri on a permanent basis from Sassuolo this summer but there are suggestions that he could still be loaned out for the campaign.

Giorgio Chiellini, Leonardo Bonucci, Matthijs de Ligt and Daniele Rugani are currently ahead of him in the pecking order for the central defensive role at the Turin giants.
