Unai Emery speaks on the future of Shkodran Mustafi

14 September 2019 - 16:05

Arsenal manager Unai Emery has said that defender Shkodran Mustafi has a future with the club despite the fact that the German has not earned a single minute of gametime this season.

  • Chelsea ready to sell four home-grown players
  • Predicted Chelsea line-up (4-2-3-1) vs Aston Villa, Palmer starts

  • The former Valencia man was heavily touted to leave the Gunners before the European transfer deadline after there was imminent interest from both Juventus and AS Monaco.

However, a deal did not materialise with either of those clubs and that has meant that the centre-back will remain with the Gunners until the turn of the year at the least.

Speaking in a press conference, Emery indicated that Mustafi decided to stay put with the Gunners this summer and he is open to working with the German similarly to other players in the squad.

"Mustafi decided to be here and when he did, for me, he is another player like the others in the team. Of course I respect his decision and, when he decided, I spoke with him and said 'for me you are in the squad and I am going to work with you as with the other players," he was quoted by ESPN.

At present, David Luiz and Sokratis remain the first-choice options at the heart of the defence but there are suggestions that the return of Rob Holding from injury could break that partnership.

Besides the trio, Calum Chambers is another option for the role and Mustafi is presumably the fifth-choice central defender for the north London giants this term.
