Benfica defender Nuno Tavares is reportedly undergoing a medical with Arsenal ahead of his transfer.
The Gunners have agreed to pay £6.9m for the left-back, and he is expected to become the club's first summer signing.
Tavares, 21, recently travelled to the English capital, and he is currently ongoing a series of medical tests before his transfer.
The Portuguese is expected to play the back-up role to Kieran Tierney, who has struggled with his fitness over the past two seasons.
Tierney has impressed with his performances, but has not stayed fit for an entire season. He made just 27 league appearances last term.
Tavares has been brought to ease the workload. Tierney could concentrate on the league with Tavares starting in the Cup competitions.
Meanwhile, the Gunners are also close to announcing the arrival of midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga from Anderlecht.
They have agreed to pay an initial £15m. Anderlecht have finalised add-ons worth £3m with a future sell-on fee percentage.
