Juventus defender Matthijs de Ligt is set to join Bayern Munich following a verbal agreement between the clubs.
The Dutchman was a top target for Chelsea at the beginning of the month with manager Thomas Tuchel being a big admirer.
However, it was quite clear that De Ligt preferred a move to Bayern, and things have moved quickly over recent weeks.
The Netherlands star agreed personal terms with Bayern recently, and the clubs have now finalised a €80 million fee.
De Ligt is set to become Bayern's fourth summer signing after Noussair Mazraoui, Sadio Mane and Ryan Gravenberch.
Despite the setback, Chelsea won't be overly disappointed, considering they are working on several alternative targets.
They recently landed a new centre-back in Kalidou Koulibaly, and also want to sign Presnel Kimpembe and Jules Kounde.
The west London giants are growing optimistic that they can land the French duo over the upcoming days without any hurdles.
Chelsea start their Premier League campaign against Everton on August 6.
