Summer of departures expected at Leicester City

Leicester players to leave club in the summer?

Summer of departures expected at Leicester City

06 January 2023 - 05:15

The ongoing uncertainty regarding the future of players such as Youri Tielemans at Leicester City continues, as manager Brendan Rodgers admits the club could be forced to let a chunk of their squad depart the club. Arsenal have been linked with a move for Tielemans, but there are six other first-team faces all out of contract this summer: Caglar Soyuncu, Jonny Evans, Daniel Amartey, Ryan Bertrand, Papy Mendy and Ayoze Perez.

  • It is understood that Rodgers has offered new deals to Evans, Amartey and Tielemans so far, but all three have rejected the contracts. Caglar Soyuncu is likely to move to Turkey at the end of his contract, whilst Ryan Bertrand will be allowed to leave on a free. It is unclear what will happen with regards to Papy Mendy, but Arsenal are ready to negotiate a deal with Tielemans as soon as the summer transfer window opens.

Brendan Rodgers admits that contract talks have been a burden, and player demands could cost Leicester City dearly.

Rodgers said: "If someone doesn’t want to be here, or someone wants too much money to be here, we have to be brave enough to say: ‘Thank you very much and on you go.’

“We’re not a club with masses of resources that can facilitate every single player’s need, especially from a financial side. A number of these guys are down on their last year, we’ve said before that we’d like them to stay, but there has to be a point in time where if what they want is too demanding for us as a club, and if the time is right, that they have to move on. We have to do that and then look forward.”
