Adams: I'd love England job

11 May 2008 - 13:45

Arsenal and England legend Tony Adams this morning revealed in the News of the World that he would love one day to coach England, and believes that there needs to be an English coach in place in the future.

  • Omari Hutchinson wants to continue at Ipswich Town
  • Mikel Arteta insists 27yo star won't be leaving Arsenal

  • "I'd love to be England manager one day, I don't deny that," Adams said.

"If the right job came along at home or abroad I would be ready to move on but I'm in no rush.

"It's important to get the right sort of job. You like to set yourself targets. If I do well as a manager then one day, if it came along, yes, I would like to be in a position where I could become England manager.

"Certainly it should be an Englishman because Fabio Capello's appointment has been a backward step as far as English coaches are concerned.

"I am delighted Gareth Southgate has kept Middlesbrough up and I told him the other day it is important he does well.

"It's good that guys like him to do well but there's a massive gap between the era of Dave Sexton, Don Howe, Terry Venables and Bobby Robson and now. I don't know what happened."
