Portsmouth win FA Cup

17 May 2008 - 20:32

Portsmouth defeated Cardiff City 1-0 at Wembley Stadium to win the FA Cup; their first FA Cup success since 1939. Kanu's first half goal was enough to secure the trophy.

  • Chelsea midfielder looking forward to London derby vs Spurs
  • Arsenal in the front row to sign Dutch striker

  • To be fair, Cardiff were more than a match for Portsmouth, and the 1-0 scoreline didn't offer a fair reflection of Cardiff's performance.

Redknapp surprisingly recalled Pedro Mendes to his starting line-up and left Kanu as the lone striker with Jermain Defoe cup-tied and Milan Baros on the substitute's bench.

Portsmouth tested Peter Enckelman very early on and the former Villa keeper looked rather dodgy at times.

Kanu nearly scored on 23 minutes when he fired against the post after some great work.

John Utaka worked well 3down the right and sent a ball into the box which Peter Enckelman parried into the path of Kanu, who hit the ball home from close range. Advantage Portsmouth.

Parry looked particularly dangerous for Cardiff and was getting down the flanks, but Pompey did survive a couple of goalmouth scrambles and Roger Johnson powered another header narrowly off target while Loovens' effort looped over the bar after he had headed the ball into the ground.

Redknapp's side battled bravely and held on to secure a 1-0 victory and guaranteed entry into the UEFA Cup next season.
