Gus Hiddink’s agent has revealed that he will not become Chelsea’s new manager. Hiddink is now remaining focused on his task in hand, to help Russia to Euro 2008 glory in Austria and Switzerland.
The 61 year-old Russian coach was among the favourites to replace Avram Grant, with Frank Rijkaard, Marcello Lippi, Sven-Goran Eriksson, Mark Hughes and even Jose Mourinho also touted as possible successors.
Despite a strong relationship with owner Roman Abramovich, Huddink has his sights set upon the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
Huddink has developed a reputation as a great man-manager in the way he has transformed the fortunes of South Korea’s national side and now Russia.
By contrast, Huddink’s fellow countryman Frank Rijkaard may be more obliging than others to take the helm, with Abromovich’s much reported involvement with the team’s decisions reportedly pushing some candidates away.
