Ronaldo eyes winger role

Ronaldo eyes winger role

09 June 2008 - 23:02

Cristiano Ronaldo has revealed that he is happy playing as a striker and winger; but prefers the latter as Portugal hope to build on their 2-0 opening victory against Turkey on Saturday.

  • Mikel Arteta insists 27yo star won't be leaving Arsenal
  • Omari Hutchinson wants to continue at Ipswich Town

  • Ronaldo said after their opening victory: "It was an important match, and a great victory in which we created many opportunities. The truth is we deserved to win. We wanted to win it - we did, and now we must continue step by step.

"2-0 is a good result that puts us top in the group. We also hit the post twice and had a goal annulled dubiously. We mastered the game over the 90 minutes, we showed that we have a great squad, and if we continue like this we can do well."

The talented winger admitted he is comfortable playing up front but prefers to play on the wings.

"I prefer to play on the wings, although I can also play as a striker!

"I'm available to do whatever for the coach, but I've always played on either side of the pitch and it's served me well. It's a question of space. Up front it's different: many times you have to come back and you can't use your speed so much - my main weapon.

"As Portugal the favourites? I don't know. What I do know is that we have gained a lot of confidence. But we must continue to fight in the standings."
