Wigan reveal De Gea offer

26 June 2011 - 04:30

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez has sensationally revealed that last year his club wrapped up a loan deal for talented young Atletico Madrid goalkeeper David De Gea, who looks set to sign for Man Utd this week. However, a deal fell through at the last minute for the Spaniard to move to Wigan.

  • Arsenal to swap Gabriel Jesus for Inter Milan star?
  • Arsenal leading race to sign Belgian midfielder

  • “It’s true, we had David signed on a loan deal, but unfortunately on the last day of the transfer window everything fell through,” Martinez told the Wigan Evening Post.

“The problem wasn’t on our side of the agreement – Atletico Madrid just felt he had to stay, and they were proved to be right.

“Shortly afterwards, their two senior goalkeepers got injured, he got an opportunity and he quickly became a hero. And everyone has been able to see for themselves the true quality of David de Gea.”

Man Utd are set to sign the Spanish under-21 goalkeeper in the next couple of weeks for a fee believed to be in the region of £11 million.
