Paris St. Germain captain Thiago Silva has confirmed that his club were interested in signing Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney but failed to push a deal through.

The Ligue 1 champions were believed to be considering an offer for the wantaway United frontman but Rooney eventually opted to stay with his club after manager David Moyes made clear of his intentions to keep him.

Silva admits that playing along with Rooney would have been great and wished the deal had gone through.

Silva said: "Wayne Rooney would have been great to play with.

"He is one of the best strikers in the world and this is also a guy who has scored against me every time I've played him. That goal at the Maracana still irks me."

The Brazil international also revealed that Barcelona were interested in his signature this summer and he has had to turn them down twice now, having done so last summer as well.

Silva told The Guardian: "It was a difficult decision to say no twice to Barcelona. It was never a secret that I have admired them since I was a kid and that I always wished I could play for Barcelona."
