Manuel Pellegrini: Misread the match situation

Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini has admitted that he was not aware that an extra goal against Bayern Munich would have sent his side to the top of Group D in the Champions League.

The Citizens put up a fantastic display at the Allianz Arena as they ran out 3-2 winners against reigning Champions Bayern Munich on Matchday 6 on Wednesday night.

Despite the win, the Premier League outfit failed to top Group D, as the club failed to get the extra goal needed to get ahead of the Bavarians on Matchday 6.

Manager Manuel Pellegrini revealed that he had opted to bench star striker Sergio Aguero, as he thought City needed two more goals rather than one to top the table.

"I was tempted if we scored the fourth goal," Pellegrini said. "Of course, that's why I sent Aguero to warm up.

"But also I think it was a risk to continue with Silva. He couldn't play more than 70 minutes.

"It is very important to be first in the group but not the most important thing. It was difficult to score two goals and I think that Silva couldn't play more than 70 minutes."

Manchester City face-off against Arsenal at the Emirates in their next Premier League encounter on Saturday.
