Liverpool fail in Hector Herrera pursuit?

Liverpool are reportedly trailing Napoli in the race to sign Porto midfielder Hector Herrera. The Mexican international is said to be eyeing a fresh challenge following a couple of seasons in Portugal.

The Reds boss Jurgen Klopp had earmarked the 26-year-old as one among his top targets given his excellent vision while passing the ball and the willingness to shoot on goal.

However, the player seems to have agreed to join Napoli for the lure of Champions League football, something which the Reds will not be able to offer in the coming season, Tuttomercatoweb claims.

The Reds failed to attain European qualification last term as they finished eighth in the league standings whilst also losing out to Sevilla in the Europa League final.

Herrera has appeared in 44 games for his national side till date.
