Napoli consider move for United defender

Napoli could be about to launch a swoop to sign Manchester United's Matteo Darmian, according to reports in Italy.

Gazzetta dello Sport is reporting that Napoli are considering a move for United's Italian defender Darmian, as they look to use the massive €90 million windfall they have received from Juventus for Gonzalo Higuaín to strengthen their squad in several areas.

The Serie A club have been linked with big money moves for Inter Milan's Mauro Icardi and Olympique Lyonnais midfielder Corentin Tolisso.

But it would appear that they are also keen to bolster their defensive options, and Darmian could become a target.

Darmian signed for United just last summer in a £14 million deal from Serie A side Torino.

Despite a strong start to his Old Trafford career, Darmian was unable to produce his best form for the majority of last season, as he was switched between right-back and left-back by Louis van Gaal.

It is now believed that new United boss José Mourinho is willing to listen to offers for the versatile Italy international, as he is reportedly keen to add Monaco's Brazilian right-back Fabinho to his ranks this summer, in a deal which could be worth up to £25 million.

Darmian featured for Antonio Conte's Italy side during the UEFA European Championship in France, where he helped the Azzurri reach the quarter-finals, before losing to Germany on penalties, with the United player missing his spot kick in the shootout.
