Mata set for United extension

Spanish midfielder Juan Mata will earn a new long-term contract at Manchester United after he impressed manager Jose Mourinho in the early stages of the campaign.

The 28-year-old has got through his patchy form in the back stage of last season, and he now looks the player he was when he first arrived at Old Trafford.

The Mirror reports that the Red Devils are prepared to offer a fresh extension to Mata after Mourinho gave a positive report over the midfielder.

Mata was said to have rift with Mourinho prior to leaving former club Chelsea, but this has been resolved after the Special One confirmed that he was not in control of the player's departure from Stamford Bridge.

The Spaniard has emerged as a fan favourite in his time at Manchester, and has racked 28 goals in 113 outings for his side. He has two years left on his previous deal.
