Rooney to be benched for England vs Scotland
England captain Wayne Rooney will remain on the bench for the Three Lions when they take on Scotland in a World Cup qualifying game next month, according to reports.
The Daily Mirror is reporting that Manchester United star Wayne Rooney will once again start from the bench when England resume World Cup qualifying duty against Scotland next month.
Caretaker manager Gareth Southgate decided to drop the England all time highest scorer for the trip to take on Slovenia last week. Rooney had started the previous game against Malta at Wembley, but the 30-year-old looked off the pace against the low ranked opposition playing in his favoured midfield role.
England slumped to a 0-0 draw without Rooney against Slovenia, and were fortunate not to lose the game with the home side hitting the post and Joe Hart having to make a string of saves to keep the score level.
Rooney has also recently been dropped to the bench at club level for United. The former Everton player has started the season in the number 10 position in Jose Mourinho’s side, but was dropped for the visit of Leicester City to Old Trafford.
United thumped the Premier League champions 4-1 without Rooney and the Red Devils skipper has been unable to make it back into the starting line up since.
United will take on Liverpool at Anfield on Monday night and Rooney is expected to be benched once again.
