Man Utd receive Antoine Griezmann transfer blow

Simeone will stay at Atleti next season

Manchester United could find it hard to lure Antoine Griezmann to Old Trafford this summer after Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone revealed his intention to stay put at the club.

The Argentine head coach asked the Atleti hierarchy to reduce his contract to 2018 earlier in the season, and this led to suggestions that he could part ways with the La Liga outfit in the summer.

However, the 47-year-old has confirmed that he would remain with Atleti next term with the club due to shift to the new Wanda Metropolitano stadium.

"I am staying here," he is quoted as saying on The Star. "I am going to stay because this club has a future and the future is all of us together."

Griezmann currently has a £85m release clause on his contract which could be triggered to bring him to the Theatre of Dreams.

However, there is still the possibility of Atleti offering him a new long-term deal in order to increase or eliminate the escape clause altogether.

Griezmann netted just 16 league goals for Atletico Madrid during the recently concluded La Liga campaign, but he is still regarded as one of the most-sought after strikers in European football.
