Manchester City have reportedly failed with an initial offer to pursue Monaco left-back Benjamin Mendy. The Citizens have already done business with the Principality outfit after having recruited Bernardo Silva on a £43m deal earlier last week.

A recent report from Sky Sports suggested that the Citizens were 'on the verge' of recruiting the France international following crunch discussions with the Monaco hierarchy.

However, it now appears that the Mancunian giants have fallen short of Monaco's £40m valuation, and this has stalled the proposed agreement, The Telegraph claims.

Pep Guardiola has revealed his transfer ambition early in the mix after having also agreed a deal in principle to sign Benfica's Ederson - pending a third-party clearance.

Mendy capped an impressive season for the Principality outfit by lifting the French Ligue 1 title, and his run has earned him a regular spot with the France national side.

The former Marseille is currently on international duty with Didier Deschamps' squad and is in line to make an appearance against England in a friendly on June 13.
