Griezmann extends Atleti stay

France international Antoine Griezmann has inked a fresh five-year contract with Atletico Madrid in order to quell speculation over a summer exit. The striker was linked with Manchester United for the best part of a year, but his latest extension has come following Atleti's failure to overturn their transfer ban.

Griezmann, 26, will receive a £235,000 a week package as part of the transfer agreement while he has refused to increase his £88m release clause, meaning that United could pursue his services for a similar sum next summer.

Jose Mourinho had initially set his sights on signing the France international, but he is now looking at other recruits with Real Madrid's Alvaro Morata the closest to arriving at Old Trafford.

Morata has already agreed on personal terms over a proposed switch this summer, and the Red Devils are confident of sealing a £70m deal despite Los Blancos' reluctant to come down on their £78m asking price.

Manchester United finished in sixth in the Premier League last season, but they still managed to clinch Champions League football via their victory over Ajax in the Europa League final.
