Newcastle want cut price Manchester City midfielder
Newcastle United are lining up a £5 million move for Manchester City defensive midfielder Fernando, who is entering the final year of his current contract at The Etihad.
The Brazilian joined Manchester City three years ago from Porto but has struggled to establish himself under the current management team at the club.
Newcastle United are back in the Premier League after a one-year absence and manager Rafael Benitez knows that he must strengthen his squad if they are to prevent another relegation battle.
The Sun reports that both Manchester City and Fernando are happy to negotiate a deal with another club and City chiefs are looking for a return of £8 million.
Benitez believes that he will be able to complete a deal in the region of £5 million, however, as Manchester City look to lower the wage bill that they currently have.
Both Bournemouth and Southampton have also been linked with a move for Fernando, but it is Newcastle United who are believed to be in pole position to complete the signing at this point.
Fernando made just five Premier League starts for Manchester City last season, but his ability to play as an anchor man would allow Newcastle's attacking midfielders to push further up the pitch.
