Herrera close to United extension

Ander Herrera is reportedly close to committing his future to Manchester United on a new long-term contract. The 28-year-old has been sparingly used this season, starting just one game in the Premier League.

According to The Manchester Evening News, Herrera will formally agree an extension in the next two months with Jose Mourinho considering him as a key part of his plans.

The Basque player has been recently linked with a potential reunion with Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde, but he is prepared to snub their interest in order to prolong his stay with the Red Devils.

Despite his reduced playing time, Herrera continues to receive praise from Mourinho, who could utilise his services regularly with Paul Pogba out with a hamstring injury.

Herrera made his only start of the campaign in the 2-2 draw at Stoke City, but he is in line to feature in the lineup when United host Burton Albion in the third round of the League Cup on Wednesday evening.

The Spain international racked 50 appearances for Manchester United last season as they celebrated an EFL Cup and Europa League double. He was also named as the club's Player of the Year owing to his impressive performance.

Herrera's current contract is due to expire at the end of the campaign, although United have the option of extending his contract by a further 12 months.
