Manchester United had kept a close watch on both Saul Niguez and Radja Nainggolan during last week's Champions League clash between Atletico Madrid and AS Roma, which ended goalless.

According to The Star, Atleti's Niguez and Roma's Nainggolan were the prime focus for the United scouts on the night with the club looking into a future replacement for Michael Carrick.

The Red Devils are already stocked with multiple midfield options, but Jose Mourinho appears keen on bolstering his squad further once Carrick hangs up his boots.

Carrick has not featured for the Red Devils since the start of the season, but he could get some valuable game time when the Red Devils host Burton Albion in the League Cup on Wednesday.

Both Niguez and Nainggolan signed long-term deals with their respective clubs earlier in the summer, and United may have to pay a hefty fee in order to prise them away in the future.

Manchester United have made a strong start to their league season, and they are currently tied on 13 points at the top with cross-city rivals Manchester City.
