Spanish giants Barcelona are planning a January approach to sign Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera. The 28-year-old has been sparingly used by Jose Mourinho this term, starting in just three of the club's nine Premier League outings.

According to Don Balon, Ernesto Valverde is eyeing a potential reunion with Herrera, who he sees as a long-term successor to Andres Iniesta.

The World Cup winner recently put pen to paper on a lifetime contract with the Catalan outfit, but the manager is still looking for further reinforcements.

Herrera currently has just eight months left on his United contract, and Barcelona are prepared to tempt the midfielder towards a La Liga return with the assurance of regular first-team football.

Manchester United have the option of extending Herrera's contract by a further year, and there is every chance that they will trigger the clause, should they find no breakthrough in contractual discussions before January.

Similarly to Herrera, Marouane Fellaini is also playing hardball over negotiations, and he could be free to speak to foreign clubs during the winter transfer window.
