Manchester United have reportedly been given the green light to pursue the signature of Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred during the summer transfer window. The 25-year-old had been strongly tipped to join Manchester City in January, but a move failed to materialise.

Earlier last month, Fred was deemed to have finalised personal terms with the Citizens after Shakhtar supposedly agreed on a £44.5m deal for his proposed move to the Etihad Stadium.

However, as per The Times, no such agreement has been put in place between the clubs, and the Citizens have now decided to switch their attention elsewhere in order to find a long-term replacement for Fernandinho.

Hence, United are now being tipped to pursue the Brazil international with Shakhtar chief executive Sergei Palkin recently confirming that the midfielder would join one of the Manchester clubs during the summer.

Jose Mourinho's side are preparing for the retirement of Michael Carrick at the end of the season while Marouane Fellaini could also leave the club with his contract expiring in three months' time.
