Chelsea plan to see of Man United and Barcelona to land Premier League defender

Toby Alderweireld news

Chelsea keen on signing Alderweireld

Premier League holders Chelsea are reportedly looking to beat off interest from the likes of Barcelona and Manchester United to pursue the signature of Toby Alderweireld this summer.

The Belgium international has reached a contract impasse with Spurs who are reluctant to match his wage demands, and the club are likely to cash in on his services as he enters the final year of his deal during the summer.

According to The Mirror, the Blues are keen to ward off interest from the likes of Barcelona and United as they seek to lure the versatile defender to Stamford Bridge during the summer.

Alderweireld will have a 12-month extension activated as he enters the final year of his contract, and Spurs are keen to avoid the situation, given the deal would attach a £25m release clause to his deal.

As a result, Spurs may have to negotiate a deal of around £40m with the player's suitors, but this should be done 14 days prior to the close of the transfer window - in order to restrict a bargain sale.
