Manchester United 'confident' of signing Tottenham Hotspur defender

Toby Alderweireld news

Manchester United nearing Alderweireld deal?

Manchester United are reportedly confident of getting a deal done for Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld during the summer transfer window.

The Belgium international has remained reluctant to extend his present contract beyond 2019 and this is likely to encourage Spurs to cash in on his services.

According to Evening Standard, Jose Mourinho's side are keen on strengthening their defence this summer and they are aiming to take advantage of Alderweireld's contract situation.

Spurs have the option of a 12-month extension which they could trigger in the Belgian's contract but this would in turn active a release clause of just £25m.

As per Evening Standard, United are prepared to offer as much as £40m for the former Atletico Madrid man and Spurs could be open to the deal as they seek to pursue Matthijs de Ligt from Ajax as a probable replacement.

Alderweireld has largely been the third-choice centre-back since his return from a hamstring injury earlier in the year but he did start the final game of the campaign against Leicester City.
