Chelsea to trigger release clause of AS Roma defender?

Manolas close to Chelsea move?

Chelsea have reportedly decided to trigger the release clause of AS Roma defender Kostas Manolas during this summer's transfer window.

The Blues are seemingly close to appointing Maurizio Sarri as their new manager and reports have suggested that he may seek to sign players from his former club Napoli.

However, according to Corriere dello Sport, Sarri also has his eye on other Serie A players and Manolas is among the leading options to bolster the heart of the defence.

It is added that the Blues could be prepared to meet the £31.5m release clause written into his contract in order to open talks with the Greek footballer.

Manolas has been with the Giallorossi over the past four seasons and during his period, he has made 168 appearances for the club across all competitions.

He was close to joining Zenit St Petersburg during the previous summer transfer window but the move was scuppered after a disagreement over the currency in which he would be paid.
