Manchester United are reportedly still furious with Diego Godin after he used their interest as a leverage to sign a new long-term deal with Atletico Madrid.

The Uruguay international had emerged as the prime defensive target for United during the dying stages of the summer transfer window after it was known that he had an £18m buy-out clause on his contract.

According to The Mirror, United are said to have not only triggered the clause but also readied a private jet in order to push through the move before the cut-off time.

However, the plane was thereafter cancelled after Godin made a surprise U-turn and informed United that he had agreed on a fresh contract extension with Atletico.

As a result, United eventually ended with no new signing to bolster the heart of the defence and The Mirror claims that Godin's failed transfer had partially triggered the friction between Jose Mourinho and the club's hierarchy.
