Manchester United plan club-record move for Serie A striker

Icardi wanted at United in January

Manchester United are reportedly weighing up a club-record attempt to sign Argentine striker Mauro Icardi from Inter Milan this winter.

The 25-year-old has transformed into one of the Serie A's most-prolific strikers over the past two seasons where he has racked nearly 60 goals across all competitions.

According to Portuguese outlet Ole, the Red Devils are planning a winter approach to sign the Nerazzurri captain and they could be prepared to trigger the £98m release clause written into his contract.

Icardi is presently contracted to Inter until the summer of 2021 but the club are supposedly keen on committing him to a new long-term deal in order to increase his escape clause further.

Meanwhile, United boss Jose Mourinho has found it tough to offer Marcus Rashford regular gametime with Romelu Lukaku preferred upfront and the move for a new marksman may witness the former considering his future with the club.

Mourinho recently came with a five-minute rant where he revealed that amount of gametime Rashford has received since his arrival but that may not be sufficient to keep hold of the striker, should he remain a bench-warmer on a regular basis.
