David de Gea: Manchester United can win the Champions League this season

Spain international David de Gea believes Manchester United are capable of winning the Champions League this season despite their slow start to the campaign.

United have already succumbed to two defeats from their first five league games but they have gained some momentum of late with back-to-back victories.

Speaking ahead of the Champions League opener against Young Boys, De Gea highlighted that the team are ready to push for the European crown this term after failing to do so since their success a decade ago.

"Of course we want to improve in the Champions League. It's such a special competition. It's a long time for Manchester United not to win this cup so we are ready to do it," he is quoted as saying by Metro.

United have looked far off from competing for the Champions League in recent years and they have not managed to progress beyond the quarter-final stage since the 2010/11 season after which De Gea joined the club.

Manchester United open their Champions League campaign with an away trip to Young Boys on Wednesday night and during the same period, Juventus and Valencia are set to tussle in the other group game.
