Frank Lampard reacts to Chelsea's embarrassing defeat at Manchester United
Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has said that his team can have no excuses following a disappointing 4-0 loss to Manchester United in their opening game of the Premier League season.
The west London giants were the better side during the initial stages of the encounter at Old Trafford but United scored out of the blue following a needless penalty conceded by Kurt Zouma.
In the second period, the Blues showcased a good level of dominance until the hour mark before the Red Devils took advantage of their defensive liabilities to score three goals in the space of 14 minutes.
Speaking after the game, Lampard said that the Blues can be no excuses for the showing and need to accept the fact that United were the better side in the moments which mattered.
He told BBC Sport: "We are missing internationals and big players but I don't want that to be an excuse. We are Chelsea. We don't want to come here and lose 4-0. It wasn't a 4-0 game for long periods but we need to accept it."
Chelsea must refocus with a midweek European Super Cup against Liverpool and it will be interesting to see how they will cope with the attacking threat from Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.
