Tottenham Hotspur confident of new deal for 30-year-old star
Tottenham Hotspur are increasingly confident that they can extend the contract of defender Toby Alderweireld beyond the ongoing campaign.
The Belgium international was widely fancied to leave Spurs earlier this summer with clubs able to trigger a £25m release clause up to 14 days before the English transfer deadline.
However, no side decided to meet the valuation for the former Atletico Madrid star and that may have turned into an advantage for the north London giants, The Sun claims.
Alderweireld has been reluctant to accept a package of around £120,000-a-week to sign a new deal with Spurs, but it appears that the defender may be willing to compromise with the wages.
The Belgian has been a regular feature for Spurs at the heart of the defence and it would surely be a relief for the club, if the 30-year-old prolongs his existing deal which expires in June 2020.
Aside from Alderweireld, Spurs are also in a similar position with Christian Eriksen but the Dane seems destined to leave the club. He could be sold off before the close of the European transfer window.
