AC Milan will reportedly compete with Manchester United in the race to sign Juventus outcast Mario Mandzukic in the New Year.

The Croatian has been deemed surplus to requirements under Bianconeri boss Maurizio Sarri and he has yet to make an appearance in any competition.

Earlier last month, reports claimed that United had struck a verbal agreement with the Serie A holders for the marksman but Tuttosport claims that the deal is far from finalised.

The same outlet suggests that the Red Devils could face competition from the Rossoneri, who are desperate to bring an experienced striker into their ranks.

Krzysztof Piatek has struggled to make a difference upfront for the San Siro outfit and he has managed just three goals from 12 appearances in the Serie A.

As a result, the club are languishing in the bottom half of the standings  and they are already 11 points off the Champions League spots after just 12 games into the campaign.

The Bianconeri wanted £14.5m for Mandzukic over the summer but that price is expected to reduce to around £8m with the Croatian playing no part for the club this season.
